Refik Anadol AKM Istanbul Inner Portrait Mirror Stretch Ceiling

Client: Pro Tanıtım / Refik Anadol

Mirror stretch ceiling at Refik Anadol's AKM Istanbul Inner Portrait installation

Project overview

For the Istanbul showing of Refik Anadol's digital artwork at AKM, a 59 m² mirror stretch ceiling in various sizes was installed on the ceiling and walls. The ultra-lightweight mirror panel system multiplied the installation's data flow and light composition across the reflective surface, giving the cultural venue's public exhibition space a surface layer that merges with the artwork.

Case study

What made this project hard?

01

Challenge

In this installation, the surface wasn't a ceiling covering — it was part of the artwork. On a reflective plane, even the smallest ripple breaks the light composition and disrupts the continuity of the data flow. Tolerance in an artwork is far tighter than what's acceptable on an architectural surface. The reflection also needed to run seamlessly from ceiling to wall.

02

Approach

We treated the ceiling and wall not as separate surfaces but as a single continuous plane, resolving the junction detail so the reflection wouldn't break. Keeping the stretch ratio within a 3% limit was the key parameter for preserving optical flatness. Panels of different sizes were laid out according to the artwork's geometry.

03

Outcome

The 59 m² surface multiplied the installation's light and data composition, expanding the artwork's spatial impact. The same approach was later used for the same work's showing at Art Basel.
