Project overview
In the passport control halls of the passenger terminal at Galataport, Istanbul's new cruise and culture waterfront, we installed a 320 m² mirror stretch ceiling. In this welcome space with heavy international passenger flow, the highly reflective surface makes the hall read as more spacious and more representative than its actual scale.
Case study
The passport control hall is the first space a passenger sees when entering the country at a cruise terminal — simultaneously a security checkpoint and a representative space. A wide, seamless surface was required. On a reflective ceiling, joints are noticeable at first glance, especially under overhead lighting, and break the sense of cohesion in the space.
We planned the surface in the largest possible single-piece sizes to minimise the number of joins. At this 320 m² scale, once the stretch ratio passes 3%, rippling and edge pull become unavoidable — so we never pushed that limit.
The hall, which opens onto international passenger flow, gained a seamless reflective surface that reads as a single plane. It continues to perform under the terminal's heavy-use conditions.
