IGA Istanbul Airport Mirror Stretch Ceiling Applications

Client: IGA

Mirror stretch ceiling above the escalators at IGA Istanbul Airport

Project overview

At Istanbul Airport, one of the world's busiest terminal buildings by passenger flow, we installed a 120 m² mirror stretch ceiling above the escalator areas. Carried out without stopping terminal operations and under heavy passenger traffic, this installation shows our working discipline on airport-scale projects.

Case study

What made this project hard?

01

Challenge

The terminal ran continuously. No scaffolding could be erected above an escalator, and the area couldn't be closed to passenger traffic. On top of that, the space above an escalator is a location where glass mirrors are ruled out on safety grounds from the outset: thousands of passengers pass beneath it every hour.

02

Approach

We pre-fabricated the panels to sizes that needed no on-site joins, and carried out installation with our own crew within the time windows the terminal operation allowed. The glass-free panel structure, at 1–1.8 kg per square metre, added no extra load to the structure and removed any risk of falling.

03

Outcome

The 120 m² reflective surface was completed without the terminal ever stopping operation. Despite heavy traffic, the escalator axis gained a seamless surface with no visible joints.
