Project overview
In the renovation of Esentai Mall — owned by Capital Partners and bearing the architectural signature of the world-renowned firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), and Almaty's most prestigious shopping centre — 800 bespoke stretch ceiling light fixtures were designed and produced for the intersections of circulation axes and the food court areas. Suspended at various sizes and heights, the fixtures combined an acrylic body lit from both below and the side with the stretch ceiling membrane in a single LED-integrated housing. This bespoke fixture family, with no equivalent produced anywhere else in the world, created a ceiling silhouette that repeated across different zones of the space while never looking identical at any single point.
Case study
For the Esentai Mall renovation, rather than a single standard fixture type for the circulation-axis intersections and food court areas, the brief called for 800 bespoke fixtures — unmatched anywhere in the world — that could adapt to the space's varying heights and widths. Lighting the fixtures from both below and the side required the acrylic body and the stretch ceiling membrane to merge flawlessly with LEDs inside the same fixture.
We designed and produced all 800 fixtures in-house, in a range of sizes and heights, combining the acrylic body and the stretch ceiling membrane into a single light box. By solving the bottom and side lighting with separate LED lines within the same fixture body, we made each fixture hang like an independent light sculpture. At the intersections and food court areas, the fixtures gave the space a dynamic ceiling silhouette through different height combinations.
The circulation axes and food court areas of Esentai Mall gained a distinctive identity befitting Kazakhstan's most prestigious mall, through 800 bespoke fixtures unmatched anywhere in the world. The project became one of the examples demonstrating Item Yapı's capacity for fully bespoke fixture design and production, well beyond a standard product catalogue.
